The town of Clinton, Missouri dates back to 1836 and it has a very interesting story. Things have changed very much since then but many old buildings have been retained and well preserved in the Historic Square District which is incidentally the biggest square in the state of Missouri. The Henry County Museum is adjacent to the square and it is a great place to see a lot of historical memorabilia. The four buildings that comprise the museum reflect the heritage of Henry County. The Adair Annexe which is part of the museum gives visitors a really good feel of life in small town America. The Henry County Courthouse which was completed in 1893 is a very stately structure built in the Romanesque architectural style which was very popular in the area at that time. The northwest portion of the courthouse has a lovely gazebo that dates to 1921. Known as the Bandstand, it is a World War I Memorial and also the venue of many local events.
