Kansas City to Clinton is about 1 hour 15 minutes — the shortest legit lake weekend from the KC metro. Take MO-7 south. That's the whole route. This post is the two-day playbook we hand to KC guests who don't want to write their own.
Friday evening (or Saturday morning)
Roll in from KC. Check in at Westbridge, drop bags, put anything cold in the fridge. Head to the historic downtown square (0.6 miles from us) for dinner — Square 109, 303 Jefferson, or The Branding Iron are the anchors. Walk the square if the weather cooperates.
Overnight: Westbridge Inn & Suites. Standard Queen for two; Three-Bedroom Family Suite if you brought kids and cousins.
Saturday: lake
Free hot breakfast at Westbridge (starts early).
Option A — no boat: Drive south to Warsaw (38 minutes) for Truman Dam and the visitor center. Grab lunch downtown, hit Long Shoal Marina in the afternoon (8 miles west of Warsaw) to look at boats and dock life. Back to Clinton by dinner.
Option B — with a boat or rental: Head to Sparrowfoot (15 minutes) or Bucksaw (25 minutes) at first light. Fish or cruise the Grand River arm. Boat charging back at the hotel that night for the trolling motor.
Saturday night
Dinner at 303 Jefferson. Dessert at Ben Franklin Bistro if it's open. Fireworks if you happened to hit Olde Glory Days weekend. Sleep hard — the wind and the sun add up.
Sunday: the Katy Trail
The Katy Trail's western terminus is 2 miles from our front desk. Even non-cyclists will enjoy a walk from the Clinton trailhead on N Price Lane. Serious riders can pedal east 20 or 40 miles and shuttle back.
Free hot breakfast at Westbridge, check out at 11 AM, back on MO-7 to KC by early afternoon.
What makes this route work
- The drive time is honest. MO-7 is a straight shot. No toll, no interstate.
- Clinton has real dinner. Not gas-station pizza. Real restaurants.
- Westbridge is a real hotel. Not a chain-managed shell.
- You can bring the boat, the bike, the dog, or none of the above.
